The Best UK Cycle Routes to Explore by E-Bike This Summer (2026)

Summer's finally here — and there's no better way to enjoy a long British evening or a free weekend than gliding along one of the country's beautiful traffic-free trails on an e-bike.

Here's the thing most people don't realise: an e-bike doesn't just make these routes easier. It makes them bigger. That 18-mile trail you'd never attempt on a normal bike? Effortless. The hilly bit that would've ended the day early? Flattened. The "I'd love to, but I'd be shattered halfway" excuse? Gone. With pedal-assist under you, the whole of Britain's trail network opens up — for you, for the kids, for grandparents, for everyone.

So we've pulled together some of the best traffic-free cycle routes across the UK to explore this summer — a mix of gentle family-friendly paths and longer, more ambitious rides. And because the right bike makes all the difference, we'll show you why our two best-selling ADO folders — the ADO Air 20S and the ADO Air 20 Ultra 2026 — are made for exactly this kind of riding.

And when you're ready to roll, subscribe to the Uni-trax newsletter for 10% off your entire order.

Why an E-Bike Transforms a Day on the Trails

A traffic-free trail is lovely on any bike. But an e-bike changes the experience in three ways:

  • You go further. A flat 13-mile path becomes a 26-mile round trip without a second thought. Suddenly the café at the far end, or the next village, is well within reach.
  • Everyone keeps up. The magic of pedal-assist is that it levels the playing field — a fit teenager, a returning rider, and a grandparent can all ride together at the same comfortable pace. Nobody's left struggling at the back.
  • It stays fun. No exhausting slogs, no dreading the return leg into a headwind. You finish the day pleasantly tired, not wiped out — which means you'll actually want to do it again next weekend.

That's why e-bikes have quietly become the perfect tool for exploring the UK's trail network. Now, where to ride.

The Best Traffic-Free Cycle Routes in the UK

A spread of the country's finest, from gentle family paths to longer adventures. All are largely or entirely traffic-free — ideal for relaxed, confident riding.

🌅 The Camel Trail, Cornwall

~18 miles · flat · largely traffic-free
One of the UK's most beloved trails, following a disused railway from Padstow through Wadebridge and Bodmin along the Camel Estuary. It has only a slight incline following the River Camel from Padstow to Wenford Bridge via Wadebridge and Bodmin, at a total of 18.3 miles long. Wildlife, woodland, estuary views, and a Cornish pasty waiting at the end. The Wadebridge-to-Padstow section (5.5 miles, no road crossings) is perfect for families with younger children. Uni-trax

🚂 Bristol & Bath Railway Path

13 miles · flat · entirely traffic-free
A classic, and a brilliant first e-bike adventure. Its 13 miles are completely traffic-free and almost entirely flat as it runs along a disused railway line. The track is a comfortable 3-metre wide and tarmacked end-to-end, taking about 1.5 hours to cycle at a relaxed pace — with sculptures, old steam engines at Bitton station, and pubs along the way. Start and end at two railway stations, so it's perfect if you're combining bike and train (where a folder shines). Uni-traxAmazon

🦦 The Tarka Trail, Devon

up to 31 miles continuous · flat · traffic-free
Named after the otter in Henry Williamson's novel, this is one of the country's longest traffic-free stretches. One of the sections is an unbroken stretch of 31 miles between Braunton and Meeth, which is free of vehicles, mostly tarmacked and a lovely smooth, flat ride. Ride as much or as little as you like — estuaries, market towns, and plenty of pubs en route. This is where an e-bike's range really pays off. Trek Bikes

🏞️ The Tissington Trail, Peak District

13 miles · gentle · traffic-free
A scenic former railway from Ashbourne to Parsley Hay through stunning limestone country. Mostly flat with gentle gradients, glorious Dovedale views, and an easy, family-friendly feel. The gentle climbs are exactly where pedal-assist turns "are we nearly there?" into "can we keep going?"

🌸 The Cuckoo Trail, East Sussex

~25km there-and-back · flat · totally traffic-free
Part of National Cycle Network Route 21, the Cuckoo Trail is a popular choice for local families... This totally traffic-free route mixes verdant countryside and the landmarks of a time gone by, with platforms and bridges marking the history of this former railway line. Ride it in spring or early summer for bluebells; start in Heathfield and head toward Polegate or Hailsham. Petrolprices

🏔️ Loch Leven Heritage Trail, Scotland

~13.5 miles · flat · circular · traffic-free
A gorgeous circular route around the loch. An easy 13.5-mile route that provides scenic views around the loch, perfect for a relaxed family outing. Look out for ospreys, kingfishers and otters, with views to Lochleven Castle on its island, and Loch Leven's Larder for a well-earned lunch. Cycling UK

🏴 The Mawddach Trail, Wales

~9.5 miles · flat · almost entirely traffic-free
Following the Mawddach estuary from Dolgellau to Barmouth, this short, jaw-droppingly scenic trail runs along a disused railway between mountains and sea. Almost entirely traffic-free and flat — ideal for young riders and anyone who wants maximum view for minimum effort.

🐉 The Taff Trail, Wales (for the more adventurous)

55 miles · varied · large traffic-free sections
For those wanting a bigger challenge, the Taff Trail runs from Cardiff Bay up to Brecon. A large proportion of the route uses former tramways, railways and canal towpaths. Plenty is gentle and family-friendly; some stretches are remote and strenuous (proper planning needed). A wonderful multi-day adventure — and the kind of distance an e-bike makes genuinely achievable. NimbleFins

A quick note on the rules: these are shared, traffic-free paths — keep to sensible speeds, give way to walkers and horse riders, and use your bell. All UK-legal e-bikes (including ours) assist up to 15.5 mph, which is plenty for a relaxed trail ride. New to the legal side? See our UK E-Bike Law & Range Guide.

Two Best-Selling E-Bikes Made for British Trails

You don't need a specialist machine for these routes — you need a comfortable, reliable, easy-to-transport e-bike with enough range to roam. Our two best-sellers fit the bill perfectly, and both fold, so they go in the boot of the car or on the train to the trailhead.

🥇 ADO Air 20S — the lightweight all-rounder (£999–£1,199)

Our most popular folder, and a brilliant trail companion. The Air 20S weighs just 18.5 kg, folds down to a compact 86 × 52 × 68 cm, and delivers a smooth, efficient ride thanks to its single-speed carbon belt drive (no oily chain, virtually maintenance-free — it only needs attention every 20,000–30,000 km). With a 250W torque-sensor motor, a Samsung 36V/9.6Ah battery offering up to 100 km of claimed range, hydraulic disc brakes, and 20×1.95 anti-puncture tyres, it handles trail surfaces with ease.

The suspension version (£1,199) adds a front fork to soak up the bumps of gravel sections and railway-path surfaces — well worth it if you'll be doing trails regularly. The non-suspension model is £999.

Best for: riders who want a light, affordable, easy-to-carry folder that's equally happy commuting in the week and exploring trails at the weekend.

🥇 ADO Air 20 Ultra 2026 — the smart, do-it-all upgrade (£1,649)

If you want the cleverest ride on the trail, the Air 20 Ultra is in a class of its own. Its BAFANG 2nd Gen H730 auto-shifting motor changes gear for you automatically — so the gentle climbs on the Tissington Trail or the longer drags on the Taff Trail are handled seamlessly, with no shifting and no thinking. With 50 Nm of torque (noticeably punchier than the 20S), a dual-sided torque sensor for a natural ride feel, a lockout suspension fork, carbon belt drive, TEKTRO hydraulic brakes, 20×2.0 all-terrain reflective tyres, and up to 100 km of range, it's built for confident all-day exploring.

It also comes with a MIK-compatible aluminium rear rack (handy for panniers and picnic kit), fully integrated lights, and clever NFC tap-to-power-on. At 22 kg it's a little heavier than the 20S, but it still folds for the car or train.

Best for: riders who want the smartest, most capable folder for longer and hillier trail days, and don't mind a small premium for auto-shifting and extra torque.
Note: the 2026 Air 20 Ultra is on pre-order, with stock expected to ship in early July — order now to be ready for peak summer.

What to Pack for a Day on the Trail

A few essentials for a comfortable, worry-free day out:

  • A charged battery (and know your real range — see our battery & range guide; expect ~60–70% of the claimed figure in the real world)
  • A helmet, water, and sun cream (yes, even in Britain)
  • A lightweight lock for café and pub stops — see our security guide
  • A pump and puncture kit (the anti-puncture tyres help, but be prepared)
  • A waterproof layer — this is the UK, after all
  • A bell — essential courtesy on shared traffic-free paths

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take my e-bike to these trails by train or car?

Yes — both the Air 20S and Air 20 Ultra fold, so they fit in a car boot or go on the train. Folding e-bikes are accepted on virtually all UK rail operators, even at peak times. Several routes (like the Bristol & Bath path) start and end at stations, making the train a perfect partner.

How far can I realistically ride on one charge?

Both bikes claim up to 100 km, but expect around 60–70% of that in real-world conditions — comfortably enough for any of the day rides here, often there-and-back. For the longest trails (Tarka, Taff), ride out and back within your range, or plan a charging stop. Full detail in our battery & range guide.

Are these trails suitable for beginners and families?

Most are ideal — flat, traffic-free, and gentle. The Camel Trail (Wadebridge–Padstow), Bristol & Bath path, Tissington, Cuckoo, Loch Leven, and Mawddach trails are all family-friendly. The Taff Trail has some remote, strenuous sections better suited to confident riders.

Do I need suspension for trail riding?

Not essential, but nice to have. Most of these routes are smooth, tarmacked former railways. If you'll ride trails regularly or want extra comfort on gravel sections, the Air 20S suspension version (£1,199) or the Air 20 Ultra's lockout fork are worth it.

Is the Air 20 Ultra available now?

It's on pre-order, shipping in early July 2026 — order now to have it ready for the summer. The Air 20S is available now.

Are these e-bikes road-legal in the UK?

Yes — both are fully EAPC-compliant (250W, pedal-assist, 15.5 mph cut-off), so no licence, tax, or insurance needed. See our UK E-Bike Law & Range Guide.
