Most e-bike brands design a bike, send the specification to a factory, and put their badge on what comes back. It's a perfectly normal way to run a business, and it's how a great deal of the market works.
ADO does something less common: it runs its own laboratory.
Every year ADO marks that with Lab Month — a campaign celebrating the testing, research and engineering behind the bikes, with reduced prices across the range. It's running now, and we're running it at Uni-trax too.
🔬 Lab Month at Uni-trax
Every ADO is already reduced to its Lab Month price. And your discount comes off on top. Take a further 10% with your newsletter discount, or 15% if you're a student or NHS staff — applied to the already-reduced Lab Month price, not instead of it.
It's worth being clear about that, because it's unusual: the Lab Month reduction and your personal discount stack. The bikes are already marked down, and your 10% or 15% comes off that lower figure.
But before the deals, it's worth understanding what ADO Lab actually is — because in a year when e-bike battery safety has been headline news, a brand that tests its own products is a more meaningful thing than it sounds.
What ADO Lab Actually Is
ADO Lab is the company's research and product development arm — the department responsible for designing, testing and validating what eventually becomes a bike you can buy.
The part that matters: ADO Laboratory has held SGS certification since 2022.
If that means nothing to you, it's worth knowing. SGS is one of the world's largest independent inspection, verification and testing organisations. A certified in-house laboratory means ADO can carry out recognised testing procedures to a standard an external body has signed off — rather than simply asserting that its bikes are safe.
ADO also works with DEKRA, another major international inspection agency, on product testing. Between them, that's a reasonably serious quality infrastructure for a brand at this price point.
What They Actually Test
This is the genuinely interesting part, and ADO publishes some of it.
Temperature tolerance. How batteries and components behave in extreme heat and cold — a real-world issue for anyone riding through a British winter. Cold reduces range; heat stresses cells. Knowing a manufacturer has tested the envelope rather than guessed at it is reassuring.
Battery and electrical safety. ADO's batteries are tested to UN 38.3, the international standard for lithium-ion transport safety, and the Air 30 series is certified to EN 15194 (the European e-bike standard) and UKCA.
Durability and build. Frame, drivetrain and component testing over simulated lifetimes — the unglamorous work that determines whether a bike is still good in year five.
Why This Matters More Than It Used To
E-bike battery fires have been repeatedly in the news, and the evidence consistently points the same way: the incidents overwhelmingly involve counterfeit batteries, mismatched chargers, and DIY conversion kits — not certified bikes from brands with real testing behind them.
So when a brand tells you it has a certified laboratory, UN 38.3 battery testing and EN 15194 compliance, that isn't marketing noise. It's the specific thing that separates a safe e-bike from the ones making headlines. It's also exactly why we sell authorised stock from brands that can demonstrate it, and why we're so consistently boring on the subject of using the charger that came with your bike.
Lab Month is a sale. But the thing it's celebrating is the reason we're comfortable selling these bikes in the first place.
What the Lab Has Actually Produced
The engineering coming out of ADO Lab is easy to trace through the range.
The G-Drive evolution. ADO moved from what it calls G-Drive BSR — Belt Single Drive + Torque Sensor + Rear Motor — to G-Drive BAR: Belt Automatic Transmission Drive + Torque Sensor + Rear Motor. In plain English, that's the jump from a single-speed belt bike to one that changes gear for itself, developed with BAFANG.
Automatic shifting across the range. The Air Pro and Ultra models now use BAFANG auto-shift motors, and the Air 30 series goes further with an integrated in-wheel auto-shifting motor that hides the gearing entirely — a feature previously found on bikes costing several times as much.
The carbon belt drive, rated to 30,000 km maintenance-free, across the whole range.
Crowdfunded proof. Both the Air 20 and the Air Carbon raised over $600,000 each on crowdfunding before launch — a genuine signal that riders wanted what the lab was building.
And it's a brand with momentum: ADO showed its full lineup at Eurobike 2025, debuting the Air One Pro.
Which ADO Should You Be Looking At?
If Lab Month has you tempted, here's the quick orientation:
- Best value full-size → Air 28 (from £999)
- Effortless full-size commuting → Air 28 Pro (from £1,299)
- Fully equipped with GPS and turn signals → Air 30 Pro (£1,399) or Air 30 Ultra (£1,499)
- Compact folder with auto-shift → Air 20 Pro (£1,399)
- Flagship folder → Air 20 Ultra (£1,399)
- Lightest carbon → Air Carbon / Air Carbon Pro
(Lab Month prices, correct at time of writing — and remember your 10% or 15% discount comes off these figures.)
A Note on Sustainability
Worth mentioning, with the honesty caveat we always apply: ADO runs sustainability initiatives alongside the lab work, including tree planting.
As we've said before, no e-bike is a zero-impact product. Manufacturing costs resources, and batteries use mined materials that eventually need recycling. The genuine environmental case for an e-bike isn't the purchase — it's riding it instead of driving, repeatedly, for years. That's where the benefit actually accumulates, and it's the same place the money saving lives too.
What a certified lab does contribute is longevity: bikes that are properly tested last longer, and the longest-lasting bike is always the greenest one.
The Takeaway
Lab Month is a good moment to buy an ADO. But the better reason to pay attention is what sits behind it.
In a market where anyone can commission a bike and put a logo on it, ADO has built a certified testing laboratory, works with SGS and DEKRA, tests its batteries to international standards, and has used that engineering to bring automatic shifting and belt drives to prices the premium brands can't match.
That's not a bad thing to celebrate with a sale — especially one where your own discount comes off on top.
