The Rule Change That Makes Folders Essential
If you're planning to combine bike and train this summer, this matters enormously — and a lot of people still don't know about it.
Since 31 March 2025, all non-folding e-bikes have been banned from most of the Transport for London network — the Tube, Overground, Elizabeth line, and DLR — including bikes converted using kits. TfL made the decision following a safety review, and says it will keep the rules under review. Anyone not complying may be refused entry, directed to leave the network, or face a fine of up to £1,000 if prosecuted.
And it's spreading beyond London. Merseyrail has announced its own ban on non-folding e-bikes from 1 January 2027, following a detailed safety review. Merseyrail confirmed that folding e-bikes will continue to be allowed on its network, and that you won't need to fold your bike to travel.
The upshot: folding electric bikes are still permitted on most TfL services — but non-folding ones aren't. If you want to take an e-bike on the train this summer, a folder is increasingly the only option that works.
A few other things worth knowing before you travel:
- Non-folding bikes aren't permitted on London buses or trams, and no e-bikes at all are allowed on the IFS Cloud Cable Car.
- Non-folding e-bikes are still allowed on the Woolwich Ferry, river services, and coach services — though this depends on the individual operator.
